Special Needs Counsellors

Company: Camp America
Location: US Summer Camps (various locations)
Benefits: Free flights, food, accommodation & pocket money of $1075
Start: Late June
Duration: Minimum 9 weeks

Description
Looking for a challenging summer job that can make a real difference to children's lives?

As a Special Needs Counsellor your role is very similar to that of a General Counsellor, but, as the name suggests, your campers will have varying special needs both mentally and physically.

In order to work as this type of Counsellor you do not need to have extensive previous experience working with special needs, just a willingness to try something different.

Special Needs Counsellors normally look after a smaller group of campers and often work on a one-to-one basis. Equally, special needs camps require Specialist Counsellors to teach all kinds of activities on offer. Working with people with disabilities can be demanding physically as well as mentally, as you may be asked to assist in lifting the campers.

In some cases you may be required to take campers to the toilet or help them shower, so before applying for this job role, ask yourself whether you are capable of providing this kind of help whilst maintaining regard for the campers' dignity. Unlike other camps, most Special Needs camps include adult campers who will require the same attention and service as the children.

We take particular care in placing staff at special needs camps, and we will not place you at such a camp without your prior agreement. Working with campers who have special needs requires staff to be very mature and responsible, but at the same time it is lots of fun and extremely gratifying. The staff who work at these camps form strong bonds with each other and the team spirit within such camps is phenomenal.

Requirements
No previous experience required but you must be willing to work with campers who may require personal care due to their mental and physical needs.

In addition you must:

• Be 18 years old by June 1st 2009
• Be available before June 28th 2009 for a minimum of 9 weeks
• Speak fluent English
• Have a passport that is valid at least 6 months after your return date
• Be able to prove to the American Consulate that you have reason to return to your home country (e.g. student status or employment).
• Be willing to attend a personal interview with a regional interviewer
• Meet the US visa, medical and criminal record check requirements
