Cornwall Outdoor Centre For Sale

03 Aug 2022

Cornwall Council are advertising a former outdoor education centre in Delaware for sale following their decision to close the "Cornwall Outdoors" outdoor education service.

Cornwall Council has confirmed that Delaware has been advertised on the market. A council spokesman said: “The site former Cornwall Outdoors site at Delaware has now been advertised for sale for community or outdoor education use, in the first instance.

“This is intended to provide organisations with an interest in providing Outdoor Education facilities first opportunity to consider and submit bids for acquisition of the site, without competition from other users or developers. Anyone interested in acquiring the site is urged to contact the agent working with Cornwall Council Vickery Holman.”

Cornwall Outdoors was part of Cornwall Council's Together for Families directorate. Cornwall Outdoors operated three residential centres and a standing camp within Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The service aimed to raise achievement and aspirations through adventure education and outdoor learning. The service closed permanently on 31st July 2022.

Delaware is located close to the River Tamar, Dartmoor and within the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The centre comprises two detached former school buildings of traditional stone built construction, which have more recently been used as an outdoor education centre. The main school building provides dormitory accommodation for up to 45 guests as well as staff bedrooms, a kitchen, dining hall, bathroom facilities and drying room.

The old headmasters house which sits adjacent to the main building around a courtyard/parking area provides office accommodation, kitchen and showers/WCs to the ground floor with further bedrooms on the first floor. In addition to the main buildings there is a further stone built store room (resource office) which currently is utilised as an equipment storage area.

To the rear of the buildings there is a garden area with a further tarmacked area behind which could be used for additional car parking with access from Moorland Way. From this area there is a barn which houses a climbing wall and a separate modular classroom building (Elliot Building) which is split into two rooms with WC facilities. Behind this area, there is a large grassy field.
