Description

This role manages a team of Outdoor Instructors alongside a second Chief Instructor. The operations team is headed up by the Centre Operations Manager, supported by two Chief Instructors.

You will also work across teams to support wider centre operational objectives and to deliver a first-class customer experience, including leisure operations, facilities, housekeeping, finance, sales & marketing, and catering. There is regular collaboration with the wider London Youth team, including with our sister centre Hindleap Warren.

The Chief Instructor Role

As Chief Instructor you are part of the collective leadership of a team of professional, enthusiastic and passionate instructors; a team that believes in the potential of every young person and wants to make a difference for each of them through the outdoor learning, residential and sports experiences we offer. Your role covers the training of instructors and quality of session delivery as well as staffing, programming and development of new sessions. You will support our focus on outcomes for the children and young people who visit Woodrow, and the quality of the experiences had by group leaders and participants alike.

The Chief Instructor role offers an excellent development opportunity for the right candidate. We expect you to be a well-qualified outdoor practitioner with a clear understanding of what effective outdoor learning looks like; and who is able to hit the ground running to facilitate a wide range of activities that support the growth, development and education of the children, young people and adults who visit us. Part of your role will require that you take on the management and development of elements of our operation - helping to develop and improve existing programmes and sessions as well as considering the scope for new ones.

As a senior member of the instructional team this role includes course directing, duty management cover, line management and operational systems responsibility. You will cover roughly one week in three of the weekday duty management shifts, and one weekend in four. During these periods you will be ‘on call’ outside office hours to support the overnight residential Duty Instructor. You will also act as Duty Instructor when required. As Duty Manager you are in overall charge of our guests’ experience from the moment they arrive through to departure. You will run daily team meetings and ensure delivery of the programme each day.

We are looking for someone flexible, enthusiastic, motivated, and customer focused who brings excellent people management, organisational, and customer service skills to the role. The post requires an individual with an aptitude for training and supporting other staff members, and a flexible approach to working hours. More widely, you will be expected to play a proactive part in the implementation of the work and policy of London Youth as a whole, supporting the vision, mission and aims of the charity.
